Osteoporosis – the Invisible Disease

Did you know?

  • That osteoporosis is one of the most common diseases and is more likely to affect women after menopause and can also affect men with aging.

Did you know?

  • That both scientific and statistical studies have proven that osteoporosis affects one out of every 4 women after the age of 45 and this is as a result of several factors including: decreased level of the hormone estrogen, lack of calcium intake in food in addition to lack of regular exercise.
  • Other reasons that may lead to osteoporosis include increased activity of the thyroid and parathyroid glands, steroid therapy, excessive smoking and alcohol and studies have also shown that there are genetic factors that may lead to osteoporosis in some cases.

Did you know?

  • That osteoporosis can occur without any symptoms which is why it has been called the ‘hidden or invisible’ disease.

Did you know?

  • That osteoporosis leads to serious complications including increased rate of fractures in the spine, pelvic bones and the wrist, with difficulty in healing of these fractures, the inability to move or use the affected joint and renders patients bedridden for extended periods of time. Pelvic fractures may also lead to death in 20% of cases as a result of internal bleeding and muscle laceration.

Did you know?

  • That starting treatment in the early stages of the disease with the appropriate medications can help in the re-absorption of calcium into the bones once again, and can prevent complications in both men and women.

That there are special tests for the early detection and follow-up for the treatment for osteoporosis and these are:
